Your Moving Checklist
A week-by-week timeline to keep your move on track.
8 Weeks Before
- Research your new city's neighborhoods, schools, and cost of living
- Get in-home estimates from at least 3 licensed movers
- Start a moving budget and folder for receipts
4-6 Weeks Before
- Book your mover or rental truck
- Begin decluttering — sell, donate, or discard what you won't take
- Start collecting free boxes and packing supplies
- Notify your school district if you have children transferring
2 Weeks Before
- Submit your USPS change of address
- Transfer or schedule disconnect/connect for utilities at both homes
- Arrange time off work for moving day
- Start packing non-essential rooms
Moving Week
- Pack an essentials box (medications, chargers, toiletries, documents)
- Confirm arrival time and details with your mover
- Do a final walkthrough and utility meter reading before you leave
After You Arrive
- Update your driver's license and vehicle registration
- Register to vote in your new state
- Locate the nearest hospital, pharmacy, and grocery store
- Register children for their new school
